Varsity Boys Golf wins All “A” Classic state-wide tournament

The win marks the first state title in school history for the Boys Golf program. With a team score of 311, the Bearcats won by a single shot over St. Henry. 

“It feels wonderful!” stated Varsity Boys Golf Head Coach Tim Rice. “These golfers put in countless hours on the range and during practice rounds, constantly working to improve at this tremendously difficult game—mostly on their own.”

According to Coach Rice, who is in his sixth year of coaching the Bearcats, high school golfers are often faced with obscure circumstances that athletes in other sports do not typically experience. 

“There are no bright lights or cheering fans … and when they struggle during tournaments, there are no subs to relieve them. When success does come, it’s often celebrated on a quiet, deeply personal level,” stated Coach Rice. “It’s a bit paradoxical to speak of the individual sport of golf in terms of a team, yet this team championship validates their work both as individuals and as a team. I’m intensely proud of this group of young men.”

The 2023-24 KCD Boys Golf team is led by Gage Mizuguchi ’24, Xavier Huestis ’25, Maverick Mead ’26, Mihir Chawla ’26, and Grayson Hayden ’28. In addition to Coach Rice, the boys golf coaching staff includes assistant coaches Peter Huestis (head of school) and Will Hacker. 

“It’s an honor and a privilege to work with this group of young men,” stated Coach Rice. “I’m incredibly lucky to have the support of these guys’ parents and the help of two very talented assistant coaches: Will Hacker and Peter Huestis.”
